Vergennes Train Station |
In the 1800's towns wanted to have trains and for most towns the depot was located in the heart of the city, closest to all the means of production.
In Vergennes most of the businesses were located on the falls of Otter Creek and materials were moved out on to the lake on steamships. The Towns people didn't think that trains would be a long term form of transportation so they relied on the steamships. Vermont’s oldest train station was constructed in the northeast corner of the town shortly after the Rutland and Burlington Railroad began serving passengers at the Vergennes stop in 1849. Male passengers entered through the left hand door and the ladies had their own entrance to the right of the main window.
This wooden structure is the oldest known in Vermont and slated to be restored and moved to a new location one–half a mile a way. Millbrook Building and Remodeling, Inc. was awarded Phase I of the project to move the building from Vergennes to Ferrisburg along Route 22A. The exterior of the building will then be restored in this phase. The hope is to restore this historical building close to it's original state.
